German Authorities Concerned Over Potential Return of Syrians Amid Recent Developments
German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser has reassured Syrian and other migrants in Germany that they will not be forcibly returned to their home countries unless they choose to go back. Her statement comes amidst growing discussions among EU leaders advocating for the return of Syrians to their homeland, which aligns with Greece’s recent stance.
Pavlos Marinakis, the Greek Government Spokesperson, earlier stated that the current situation should "mark the end of the flux of refugees from this country."
Healthcare Sector Faces Risk from Syrian Returns
Minister Faeser has expressed concern about the potential adverse effects on the German labour market if Syrians decide to return home, particularly in the healthcare sector. German Health Minister emphasized the critical role played by over 6,000 Syrian doctors in Germany, highlighting their contributions as indispensable.
According to recent data, 236,000 Syrian nationals are currently employed in Germany, with nearly two-thirds working in essential sectors. The German Federal Doctor’s Association reported that by the end of 2023, 5,758 Syrian doctors were actively serving in the healthcare system, with 5,000 of them working in hospitals.
Survey Shows Many Syrians Considering Return
A survey of Syrian doctors in Germany revealed that 76 per cent (941 out of 1,238 respondents) are contemplating returning to Syria after the fall of Bashar al-Assad. However, Faisal Shahada, head of the Syrian Doctors and Pharmacists Association in Germany, criticized the depiction of Syrians as mere workers, stating:
"We are not just workers and numbers in the labour market. We are citizens who have built lives here with great effort. This aspect has been completely ignored by politicians and the German press."
UNHCR Data on Syrian Returns
UNHCR data shows that approximately 34,000 Syrian refugees returned to their homeland during the first eight months of 2024, marking an increase compared to the same period in 2023.
