Several German Airports to Halt Departures on February 1 Due to Workers’ Strikes
As a result, several German airports have announced the suspension of departures on Thursday, AtoZSerwisPlus.de reports.
The strike will affect the airports of Hamburg, Bremen, Hanover, Berlin, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Leipzig, Dresden, Erfurt, Frankfurt/Main, and Stuttgart.
Ver.di is negotiating with the Federal Association of Aviation Security Companies (BDLS) on behalf of 25,000 industry employees. Despite three rounds of collective bargaining on this matter, no agreement has been reached thus far.
They demand a €2.80 hourly wage increase and enhanced functional and overtime bonuses from the first hour, spanning a twelve-month collective agreement.
Wolfgang Pieper, a negotiator from Ver.di, explained that this demand aims to compensate for the loss of purchasing power of employees caused by inflation.
According to him, to recruit and retain the urgently needed skilled workers, aviation security work needs to remain financially attractive.
On the other hand, the potential offer from employers includes a four per cent wage increase in 2024, which is €0.55 more per hour in the lowest wage group and nearly €0.82 more per hour in the highest wage group. Meanwhile, in 2025, there should be a further three per cent growth.
Pieper noted they reject preconditions for negotiations. According to him, the offer is inadequate, stating that it doesn’t address the high inflation of the last two years.
Berlin Airport (BER) also confirmed they will not operate departures on Thursday while noting that arrivals may also be affected.
Hanover Airport also confirmed Thursday departures are cancelled while noting there might be cancellations on arrivals as well.
Hamburg Airport announced the closure of the central security checkpoint for the entire day on Thursday.
Airports have advised affected passengers to reach out to their tour operators for details on rebooking and alternative travel options.
Meanwhile, the collective bargaining is scheduled to resume on February 6 and 7 in Berlin.
