Number of People Living in Germany Exceeded 84 Million for the First Time
According to the most recent press release issued by Destatis, on June 30, 2022, the number of people living in Germany grew by 843,000, or 0.1 per cent compared to the end of 2021, AtoZSerwisPlus.de reports.
Destatis pointed out that such an extensive growth of the population was recorded only in 1992 when borders opened in eastern Europe and in 2015 when a high number of migrants left their country to reach Germany.
“The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that following German reunification, such extensive population growth was recorded only in 1992 (+700,000), when borders had been opened in eastern Europe and war was waged in Yugoslavia, and in 2015, when migrants fled to Germany (+978,000). For comparison,” the statement of Destatis reads.
It has been highlighted that the increase in the number of inhabitants in Germany is, among other factors, due to the arrival of refugees from Ukraine.
Data show that around 750,000 citizens of Ukraine entered Germany in the first half of 2022. At the end of June 2022, the number of Ukrainian women and girls living in Germany was up by 501,000 from the end of 2021, whereas the number of Ukrainian men and boys living in Germany was up by 248,000.
“Arrivals of Ukrainians due to the Russian aggressive war led to a rise in immigration similar to that of 1992 and 2015,” Destatis added.
Destatis also revealed that the excess of deaths over births had a dampening effect on the growth of the population. According to the latter, deaths exceeded birth in Germany by 161,000 in the first half of 2022.
