Indians, Bosnians and Kosovars Represented the Largest Share of Non-EU Workers in Germany in 2021
According to the Federal Statistical Office of Germany, Destatis, the number of workers who immigrated to Germany within the last ten years tripled. At the end of 2021, Germany’s Central Register of Foreigners recorded 295,000 people with temporary residence permits for employment purposes.
Of the total number of people with temporary residence permits, data show the largest groups of non-EU workers come from India, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Kosovo, AtoZSerwisPlus.de reports.
At the end on 2021, Germany recorded 33,900 workers from India, 26,300 workers from Bosnia and Herzegovina, and 19,600 workers from Kosovo.
Apart from these three countries, Serbia (17,400), China (16,700), the United States (16,500), Albania 913,800), Northern Macedonia (13,500), Türkiye (10,700), and Russia (9,400) also make the top ten list of countries whose citizens immigrated to Germany for work purposes.
Destatis revealed that the number of non-EU workers in Germany at the end of 2021 was 226 per cent higher than in 2011. At the end of 2011, there were only 90,500 non-EU workers who had a residence title.
“Their number (non-EU workers) has more than tripled (+226 per cent) within ten years. At the end of 2011, well above 90,500 people with such a residence title were registered in Germany,” the statement of Destatis reads.
Of all the non-EU workers in Germany at the end of 2021, it has been pointed out that 69,900 are graduates and highly qualified specialists who have been recruited with the Blue Card since 2012, whereas 225,500 of them were recruited without a Blue Card.
Apart from the high number of workers from non-EU countries, work-related immigration from EU countries also increased sharply. According to data, around 1.65 million citizens of other EU countries were working in Germany in 2021. The most frequent EU countries of origin are Poland, Romania, Italy, and Croatia.
Despite having such a high number of workers from other countries, Germany still needs to fill in 1.7 million vacancies. Thus, Germany is planning to make it easier for skilled migrants to take up jobs in the country.
The German authorities said that they are considering applying less strict rules as the country needs to fill the job deficit. Currently, Germany needs to employ the highest number of workers in the air travel and hospitality sector.
