Increased Number of Israelis With German Ancestry Applying for German Citizenship
According to Germany’s Federal Office of Administration (BVA), in the first four months of 2024 a total of 6,869 applications for naturalisation have been filed by Israelis, AtoZSerwisPlus reports.
Such a number represents a sharp increase compared to 2022 and 2023. Throughout the 12 months of 2022 and 2023, Germany received 5,670 and 9,129 applications, respectively.
In addition to sharing data for the first four months of this year, the German authorities suggested that they expect to see a further increase in the next months. According to them, this increase will be fueled by the ongoing conflict in the region.
Germany decided back in 2021 to give the right to naturalisation to victims of Nazi persecution who were forcibly deprived of their German citizenship on political, racial, and religious grounds between January 20, 1933 and May 8, 1945.
Since 2021, children born in wedlock to mothers who were deprived of their German nationality and foreign fathers before April 1, 1953, have been eligible for German citizenship.
Moreover, eligible for German citizenship since 2021 have also been children born out of wedlock to fathers deprived of German nationality and foreign mothers before July 1, 1993.
Some other groups of people who were forcibly denied their German nationality due to persecution on political, racial, or religious grounds are also entitled to naturalisation.
Germany Continues to Show Support for Israelis
Germany continues to show its support for Israel and its citizens, with the country deciding earlier this year to permit Israelis to stay visa-free in the country following the Hamas attacks.
Back in January, Germany decided to permit all Israeli citizens who were in Germany to stay in the country until April 26, 2024, without the need to apply for a residence permit or extend their visa-free stay.
In addition to the above-mentioned, to underline the importance of its historical responsibility towards Jewish people and Israel, Germany has decided to include a total of 12 questions on Judaism and Israel in its citizenship test.
According to the Minister of Interior of Germany, Nancy Faeser, Germany has a responsibility to this group of people, stressing that this responsibility is part of Germany’s “contemporary identity”.
The questions address Jewish history, the state of Israel, and Germany’s relationship with the Jewish state.
