Germany’s Train Travel to Face Disruptions Throughout the Whole 2024
The decision of the Union is expected to affect hundreds of thousands passengers, with Deutsche Ban telling everyone to avoid rail travel during the strikes, AtoZSerwisPlus.de reports.
As I Am Expat Germany explains, 97 per cent of German Trade Drivers’ Union members voted to keep an indefinite strike. Nonetheless, it has been stressed that the strike will not disrupt Christmas travel, with the Union assuring everyone that they will be able to use rail services.
The union’s vote to have an indefinite strike came following unsuccessful negotiations between train drivers and Deutsche Bahn.
The union has requested that the working hours for train drivers be reduced from 38 to 35 hours per week. The same said that this change in the working hours should be made without a pay reduction.
Even though the GDL is the smaller of the two unions at Deutsche Bahn, I Am Expat Germany notes that it has a high number of train drivers, meaning that the union can disrupt transportation to a large extent during a strike.
During the last strike, around 80 per cent of long-distance trains were cancelled in Germany, and any strike taking place next year is anticipated to have a significant impact on train travel.
Back on December 7, after the last strike, the boss of GDL, Claus Weselsky, said that the union would not be holding another strike this year. He said that the next strike will take place on January 7, meaning that there will be no disruptions in the remaining days for this year.
However, he warned that from January 8, passengers would face severe disruptions and said that they should expect longer labour disputes.
Since the beginning of the talks and until now, Deutsche Bahn has refused all the union’s requests, especially the one regarding the reduction of working hours, thus leading to an indefinite strike.
Apart from requiring reduced working hours, GDL has also demanded an additional €555 per month for all employees as well as a €3,000 bonus amid the increased prices.
On the other hand, Deutsche Bahn has offered an 11 per cent pay increase that will apply gradually over three years and a bonus of €2,850.
