Germany’s Population Reaches a Record High Due to Ukrainian Refugees
The Federal Statistical Office of Germany, Destatis, has said that arrivals of Ukrainians fleeing war has led to a rise in immigration similar to that of 1992 and 2015. Data show that in the first half of 2022, the number of inhabitants in Germany exceeded 84 million for the first time, AtoZSerwisPlus.de reports.
Destatis explained that compared to the end of 2021, the population increased by 82,000 people or 0.1 per cent. In addition, the same noted that the majority of refugees from Ukraine are women and children.
Figures show that at the end of June 2022, the number of Ukrainian women and girls living in Germany was up by 501,000 compared to the end of 2021 and the number of Ukrainian men and boys was up by 248,000. This means that around 750,000 Ukrainians were living in Germany in the first half of 2022.
As for the total net immigration, provisional results have shown that it was around one million.
“The current development is due to the arrival of refugees from Ukraine as a consequence of the Russian war of aggression. Net immigration of Ukrainians to Germany amounted to approximately 750,000 in the first half of 2022. Total net immigration was around one million, according to provisional results. It was thus seven times higher than in the first half of 2021 (134,000),” the statement of Destatis reads.
Destatis emphasised that such an extensive population growth has not been recorded since 1992, when borders had opened in eastern European, and the war was waged in Yugoslavia, and since 2015 when migrants fled to Germany.
Just like Germany, it is believed that the population has also significantly grown in Poland too, as the country has registered the highest number of Ukrainian refugees among other European Union countries. Data show that around 1.4 million refugees from Ukraine registered for Temporary Protection in Poland as of September 12, 2022.
As for the overall data, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) shows that a total of 7,535,874 refugees from Ukraine have been recorded across Europe. Moreover, UNHCR shows that of the total number of refugees from Ukraine, 4,178,551 of them have registered for Temporary Protection of similar national protection schemes in Europe.
