Germany’s Freezing Weather Causes More Flight Landings and Train Cancellations at Munich Airport
According to a statement from the Munich airport, flights that were scheduled until midday are cancelled as freezing rain hits Germany,AtoZSerwisPlus.de reports.
The Munich Airport has cited the forecast freezing rain at night, which endangered the safe landing of flights. In addition, MUC Airport said they are working to allow air traffic to resume from midday, but the majority of flights will also have to be cancelled during the rest of the day due to safety concerns.
The authority once again advised travellers to contact their respective airlines before travelling to the airport in order to find out the status of their flight and not come to the airport physically in order to avoid disruptions.
In the comments section on the X (formerly Twitter) platform, passengers expressed their discontent with the situation.
The airport replied, saying that the problem is that the wet snow and temperatures are around freezing point in Germany, while in Scandinavia, the temperatures, in general, are much colder, which results in powder and snow that is much drier.
Images shared by passengers on social media show people lying on the floor while waiting for their flights, and many commenters mentioned the havoc caused during the weekend. MUC Airport warned of delayed and cancelled flights earlier this week as the meteorological conditions worsened in the coming days.
Out of 840 flights scheduled for Monday, 230 have been cancelled, and the airport’s Christmas market was also closed. A similar situation at the Munich airport occurred last year, around the same time, with 133 flight cancellations recorded due to a frozen runway.
