Germany to Streamline Migrant Deportations
The country’s new migration bill was unveiled by the Minister of Interior of Germany, Nancy Faeser, earlier this week, with the minister saying that anyone who does not have the right to remain in Germany must leave the country, AtoZSerwisPlus.de reports.
As explained by DW, the bill would give the power to German authorities to enforce the repatriation of migrants who are found to be dangerous, such as people smugglers and criminals.
Moreover, the set of measures also includes the extension of the allowed period of detention for people who are found to be dangerous from ten days to 28 days. Such an extension is planned to be introduced in order to give the authorities more time to prepare for deportation.
Presenting the draft law, Minister Faeser said that Germany is already living up to its humanitarian responsibility for 1.1 million Ukrainian refugees and those seeking protection from other regions.
As Minister Faeser revealed, the number of those who do not have the right to remain in the territory of Germany has significantly increased so far this year. She further disclosed that the number of returns this year is already 27 per cent higher than in the same period last year.
Taking into account such a high number of returns, Minister Faeser emphasised that there is an immediate need for change.
As part of the measures on the so-called “repatriation package”, the Ministry wants to give the right to the authorities to also search apartments of those staying in the country irregularly and found to be dangerous to look for documents and clarify their identity.
In addition, when certain people live in shared accommodation, police will be permitted to enter other rooms apart from the bedroom belonging to the individual in question.
Deportations will also no longer be announced for those who are in custody and who have been asked to leave the country. This means that the one-month notice period requirement for deportations will be abolished.
