Germany to Keep In Place Its Internal Border Controls With Poland, Czechia and Switzerland Until March 2024
Announcing the extension of the measure, the Federal Minister of Interior Nancy Feaser said that she has decided to keep controls in place with the three countries until March 15 of next year, AtoZSerwisPlus.de reports.
According to Minister Faeser, the measures have proven to be effective in combating people smuggling and irregular migration so far. For this reason, they will remain in place until March 2024.
As data show, since mid-October, when stricter border rules started applying, the German Federal Police have arrested around 340 people smugglers at the borders with the three countries.
Moreover, increased controls have also led to a decrease in the number of people entering the territory of Germany irregularly.
Minister Faeser revealed that thanks to internal border controls, the number of irregular entries has significantly dropped in November compared to October.
She said that the number of irregular entries decreased by over 60 per cent nationwide, falling from more than 20,000 in October to around 7,300 in November.
The internal border controls with Poland, Czechia, and Switzerland mean that everyone entering Germany through these countries has to undergo checks.
However, Minister Faeser highlighted that the country will take all necessary measures to ensure that measures have a minimal impact on trade and travel as well as on the lives of daily commuters.
In addition to having internal border controls with Poland, Czechia, and Switzerland, Germany also has border controls in place with Austria.
As the authorities revealed, the border controls with Austria will remain effective until May 11, 2024.
So far this year, the German Federal Police have prevented around 119,000 unauthorised entries into Germany. This is a significantly higher number than last year when the country prevented around 92,000 unauthorised entries.
Germany is not the only Schengen country extending its measures. Austria just recently extended its border controls with Czechia for another two months.
Moreover, countries like Czechia, Slovakia, and Slovenia also currently have border controls.
