Germany to Extend Internal Border Controls With Czechia, Poland and Switzerland Until Mid-December
According to the spokesperson of the Federal Ministry of Interior, Minister Faeser wants to extend the border checks until December 15 due to irregular migration and smuggling concerns, AtoZSerwisPlus.de reports.
During a news conference held in Berlin, the spokesperson said that the Commission of the European Union would soon be notified of the extension. The same stressed that such a measure is necessary.
Germany started to apply stricter border measures with the three countries earlier this year. The strict measures have proved to be effective, and for this reason, the Ministry of Interior said it is important that they continue keeping them.
Specifically, the Ministry said that the measures are necessary at the Polish border and that they should remain effective for as long as needed.
Internal border checks with Poland were introduced on October 16, and data show that since then, the authorities have prevented unauthorised entries of about 1,100 individuals.
The number of irregular entries has been high at the German-Swiss border, too. For this reason, the border checks will also be extended with Switzerland.
According to data provided by the federal police, a total of 2,245 migrants attempting to cross the German-Swiss border were caught in October of this year.
While it is still very early and difficult to tell whether the measures will lead to a decreased number of irregular entries, the authorities have said that they will definitely play an important role in detecting people smugglers.
The police said that since internal border checks with Switzerland were introduced, a total of 15 people smugglers have been arrested.
As for nationwide data, the authority said that a total of 230 people smugglers have been caught across all country’s borders since checks entered into force.
Several other Schengen Member States currently have border checks in place, including Austria, Poland, Czechia, and Finland, among many others.
Just last month, Austria decided to keep its border controls with Hungary and Slovenia in place for another six months.
The Austrian Ministry of Interior said that checks will remain in force until May 2024, and the same said that the measure has been extended with the aim of combating terrorism and human trafficking across borders.
Czechia and Poland have both extended their border controls with Slovakia. Czechia said that it will keep border controls in place with Slovakia until January 3, 2024, and Poland said that it will keep them in place until January 2, 2024.
