Germany Saw Record Breaking Increase in Naturalisations in 2022 Syrians Lead the Way
Data provided by the German authorities show that a total of 168,500 people with 171 different nationalities became citizens of Germany last year.
Such a high number in naturalisations corresponds to an increase of 28 per cent compared to 2021 as well as to a significant increase compared to the other years, too, AtoZSerwisPlus.de reports.
Among the new citizens, data show that those with a Syrian background comprised the largest group, with a total of 48,300 naturalised people.
On average, the newly naturalised people with a Syrian background were almost 25 years old and had been living in Germany for about 6.4 years, the Commission of the European Union explains.
The same notes that the majority of the Syrians who became German citizens last year have fulfilled all the necessary criteria, including adequate language skills and a minimum of eight years of residence in Germany, among others.
“On average, they were almost 25 years old and had been living in Germany for around 6.4 years. Most of the naturalised Syrians were refugees who have now fulfilled the necessary conditions, such as sufficient language skills, a secure livelihood, and, as a rule, at least eight years of residence in Germany,” the statement of the EU Commission reads.
Nonetheless, the requirement to have legally resided in Germany for at least eight years did not apply to minor children as well as spouses. In total, about 15,400 family members from Syria were also naturalised last year, nearly triple the number compared to 2021.
Additionally, data shows that around 5,600 Ukrainians were granted German citizenship in 2022 – nearly three times the number compared to 2021.
On average, Ukrainians who gained German citizenship last year were 36.1 years old and had resided in the country for 13.3 years. The Turkish community was the second largest group, with 14,200 naturalisations, following an average residence period of 24.2 years.
As the Federal Office of Germany explains, special language, professional achievements, or civic commitments can lead to attaining German citizenship after just six years.
Last year, a record-breaking 23,100 naturalisations were reported due to outstanding integration performance, and specialists predict a further increase in the number of those attaining German citizenship.
The current figures on naturalisation reflect important aspects of integration in Germany. The naturalisations increase shows that more and more people in Germany now meet the necessary conditions and are aiming for permanent residence in the country.
The high number of naturalisations of people from countries like Syria, Ukraine, Iraq, and Türkiye also highlights the status of Germany as a destination for individuals from diverse parts of the world.
