Germany Saw 419,000 Foreigners on Work Permits at the End of 2023
Such a number of foreigners holding a work permit represents a sharp increase compared to 2007, when only 76,800 foreigners were authorised to work in the country, AtoZSerwisPlus reports.
According to the German Federal Statistical Office, Destatis, the number of labour migrants coming to Germany from non-EU countries for the purpose of working has increased steadily since 2010.
The same explained that while in 2020 and 2021, during the pandemic, there was a modest growth in foreign workers, 2022 and 2023 saw a significant increase with 56,000 and 68,000 additional labour migrants, respectively, representing a 19 per cent rise each year.
EU Blue Card Holders Dominated Foreign Workforce in 2023
As data show, at the end of 2023, a total of 113,000 foreigners were holders of the EU Blue Card in Germany.
Blue Card holders in Germany at the end of 2023 represented more than a quarter of all labour migrants in the same year, with them having the highest chances of being employed in the country due to their qualifications.
The EU Blue Card is issued to highly qualified foreign workers, and the document entitles the holder to take up residence in the EU for the purpose of employment.
According to Destatis, so far, the majority of EU Blue Card holders in Germany are from India (33,000), Russia (10,000), and Türkiye (8,000).
To be granted an EU Blue Card, highly qualified workers from non-EU countries must prove that they have a university degree, qualification, and a specific job offer with a gross annual salary of at least €56,400.

Moreover, an additional of around 52,000 foreign skilled workers with vocational training held a residence permit, a 26 per cent increase compared to 2022, when 11,000 fewer foreigners were granted the document.
