Germany Passes New Law That Makes It Easier for Skilled Workers to Move to the Country
Announcing the news, the Ministry of Interior spokesperson said that the new law is expected to be implemented on March 1, 2024.
This means that from spring of next year, qualified workers from third countries will be able to enter Germany for work purposes under more relaxed conditions, AtoZSerwisPlus.de reports.
Among many other things, the law provides for the introduction of a so-called Opportunity Card, which will allow citizens of non-EU countries to enter Germany and remain in the country for up to a year with the purpose of finding employment.
Based on their job experience, language skills, age, as well as links with Germany, foreigners seeking employment in the country will be able to score points that entitle them to the card. The card will then serve as a residence permit for one year.
As the authorities have explained, a requirement to receive the Opportunity Card will be a university degree or vocational training.
In addition to the above-mentioned, it has been noted that as soon as the newly approved law becomes fully effective, asylum seekers will also have it easier to find employment in Germany.
Asylum seekers who entered Germany before March 29, 2023, and who have the needed qualifications will be able to withdraw their asylum application and apply for a work and residence permit.
“People involved in asylum proceedings who entered the country before March 29, 2023, and have the prospect of a qualified job will be given the opportunity to withdraw their asylum application and apply for a work and residence permit instead,” the statement of Deutschalnd.de reads.
This means that this group of people will be permitted to take up employment in Germany under facilitated rules.
In the future, IT specialists will also be permitted to enter Germany without a university degree, provided that they hold the necessary qualifications to work in this specific field.
Such a change will be made as the recognition of degrees for non-EU foreigners wishing to be employed in Germany has been a major challenge for years now.
Facilitated rules will also apply to foreigners who are in Germany on a tourist visa. As the authorities have explained, those who are in Germany on a tourist visa will not be required to leave the country and then return for the purpose of finding employment.
