Germany Passes Law to Open up New Opportunities for Non EU Jobseekers
Commenting on the bill’s adoption, the German Minister of Interior, Nancy Faeser, said that this draft law secures prosperity in Germany while stressing that it is unacceptable to have to fill out 17 different applications to bring new workers into the country, AtoZSerwisPlus.de reports.
Minister Faeser further noted that the next step taken by the government had to involve the removal of bureaucracy.
According to Deutsche Welle, a new innovation under the law is the so-called “Opportunity Card” and its points system, which will allow foreigners who have not found a job yet to come to Germany for up to a year to find employment.
A requirement for receiving this card will be a university degree or vocational training.
Moreover, it has been explained that the card will be granted to foreigners who fulfil a number of conditions, including language skills, ties to Germany, and professional experience, among others, for which they will be awarded points.
“Criteria for which points are allocated include language skills, professional experience, age and links to Germany. In future, even skilled IT professionals without a university degree will be able to come to Germany, provided they can demonstrate that they have specific qualifications,” the statement of the German authorities reads.
This card will also permit all of its holders to work for up to 20 hours per week during the time they are looking for a job.
In line with the newly adopted law, it will also be easier for asylum seekers who entered Germany before March 29, 2023, and who have the appropriate qualifications and a job offer to join the labour market.
“It will also be easier for asylum seekers who entered the country before March 29, 2023, and already work in or have the prospect of a qualified job,” the authorities emphasised.
Similar changes will also apply to those who are in Germany on a tourist visa. They will not be asked to leave the country before returning with the purpose of finding employment.
The recognition of degrees has been a major challenge for non-EU foreigners wishing to take up employment in Germany.
However, in the future, skilled immigrants will no longer be subject to the requirement to have their degree recognised, provided that they have at least two years of professional experience as well as a degree recognised by the issuing country.
In addition to the above-mentioned, Germany now also wants to reform its citizenship law too, with Martin Rosemann from Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s SPD saying that the country needs to give skilled foreigners a long-term perspective.
