Germany: Number of Students Who Acquired a University Degree Decreased by 2% in 2022
According to the German Federal Statistical Office, Destatis, such a number represents a two per cent decrease compared to 2021, when 518,000 students and doctoral candidates acquired a degree, AtoZSerwisPlus.de reports.
On the other hand, the number of students who graduated from one of the German universities in 2022 almost reached the level of the pre-pandemic year 2019, when 508,000 students and doctoral candidates got a degree.
As data provided by Destatis show, in 2022, most students, namely 41 per cent of them, acquired a university degree in law, economics, and social sciences.
A good one in four qualifications, or 26 per cent, were in the field of engineering. Moreover, 11 per cent of university degrees were acquired in mathematics and natural sciences, nine per cent of the degrees were acquired in humanities, and seven per cent of the degrees were acquired in the human medicine/health sciences groups.
As for the remaining six per cent, data show that degrees were also acquired in the groups of sports, agriculture, veterinary medicine and art, forestry and nutritional sciences, and art science.
In addition to the above-mentioned, Destatis disclosed that in 2022, students obtained more master’s degrees than bachelor’s degrees.
According to Destatis, almost every second exam, 49 per cent or 246,000, in the 2022 exam year led to a bachelor’s degree.
While such a number may seem high, compared to the previous year, the number of bachelor’s degrees acquired in 2022 fell by four per cent.
On the other hand, the number of master’s degrees increased by one per cent, from 144,800 in 2021 to 145,900 in 2022.
Similar to the previous year, Destatis notes that nine per cent of all qualifications were in teaching (47,100 qualifications in total).
Of these, 18,400 were bachelor’s degrees whose holders do not qualify for teaching, 17,600 were master’s degrees, and 11,100 were state examination degrees.
Moreover, with 27,700 degrees in 2022, five per cent of the exams completed were doctorates, and another 2,700 were traditional university qualifications.
