In 2021, domestic and international tourism restrictions were still in force due to COVID-19; as a result, the pre-crisis level of 21.6 million German passengers registered in 2019 was not reached, thus accounting for a percentage of -24.7 per cent.
“Approximately 16.3 million air passengers arrived at, or departed from, the 23 largest commercial airports in Germany in June 2022. Their number has more than tripled (+215.1 per cent) compared with June 2021,” the statement issued by Destatis reads.
In addition, due to a strike action that took place earlier this week, Germany’s flag carrier, Deutsche Lufthansa, announced that almost all flights scheduled for July 27 were cancelled.
Through a statement, Lufthansa also stated that the airline was forced to cancel almost all of its flight schedules at its hubs in Frankfurt and Munich for July 27, as this strike announced by the union ver.di had a great operational impact.
Lufthansa revealed that a total of 32 flights were cancelled on July 26, while 646 flights were cancelled on July 27 in Frankfurt.
As for the Munich hub, it was announced that on Tuesday, July 26, 15 flights were cancelled, while on July 27, another 330 got cancelled.
After the high number of flights reported by Lufthansa, it was estimated that around 92,000 passengers were affected at Frankfurt airport, and another 42,000 passengers were affected at the centre of Munich.
On the other hand, according to the International Council of Airports (ACI Europe), in the first half of 2022, European airports have handled 660 million additional passengers.
The latest data from ACI Europe also shows that passenger traffic at European airports increased by 247 per cent in the first half of 2022 compared to the same period in 2021.
In addition, international traffic experienced an increase of 381.2 per cent, instead of domestic traffic, which registered an increase of 8.5 per cent.
Moreover, the increase in the number of flights was concentrated in the second quarter, after the easing of travel restrictions due to COVID-19.
ACI Europe highlighted that airports in the EU+ market saw the largest increase in passenger traffic in the first half of 2022 at 348.9 per cent. As the ACI Europe explains, this increase comes from the increase in the volume of passengers to 635 million from 140 million compared to the same period last year.
