Germany Makes It Easier to Obtain an ID and Passport Starting November 2023
The new changes will take effect in November 2023, following the new regulation passed by the federal government on October 11, aimed at simplifying the application process.
The introduction of the new procedures will occur progressively, starting in November 2023 and continuing through to May 2025, AtoZSerwisPlus.de reports.
Nancy Faeser, Germany’s Federal Minister of the Interior, emphasised the country’s digitalisation efforts to enhance people’s lives by saving time, reducing paperwork, and simplifying administrative procedures.
Starting on November 1, individuals can confirm their receipt of the PIN letter for their online ID in text form. As a result, identity cards, passports, and electronic residence permits can be collected from document-issuing machines, if these machines are accessible at the location.
This change eliminates the need for in-person visits to collect documents, allowing citizens to securely access over 200 online services using their online ID card’s PIN from both government agencies and private companies, regardless of their location.
Eventually, more changes are set to be implemented by spring 2025.
Citizens will receive their PIN letter directly at the time of the application at the government office and no longer by post. Additionally, for a fee, they can choose to have their requested ID documents sent directly from the manufacturer to their registered address, eliminating the need to pick up new ID documents.
Starting in May 2025, new official documents will exclusively feature digitally taken biometric photographs. These photos will be taken either by government authorities or photographers while aiming to enhance security and identification processes, notably during border control checks.
Local authorities will play an essential role in verifying the identity of applicants, recording their biometric data, and ensuring compliance with these requirements.
This updated procedure not only improves the convenience of obtaining identification documents but also offers citizens increased security against the misuse of their identification documents. The continuous digital processing of these documents safeguards them against unauthorised alterations.
The newly passed regulation reflects Germany’s commitment to modernising its administrative processes and enhancing the overall experience for its citizens.
