Germany, Italy and Spain Deny Claims of Having Stopped Issuing Schengen Visas

Speculations started to circulate that the consular missions of these three Schengen countries have suspended the issuance of visas.

However, Germany, Italy, and Spain said that nothing has changed and, at the same time, blamed the backlog of applications for the limited available slots, AtoZSerwisPlus reports.

Commenting on the matter and assuring Turkish nationals that Germany is receiving visa applications as per usual, the German Embassy in Ankara stressed that they have received a higher number of applications than available appointments.

Due to this, the embassy suggested that some applicants might be required to wait longer than some others until new appointments are made available.

As Daily Sabah explains, the German Embassy further stressed through an official statement that the consular missions in Ankara, Istanbul, and Izmir are actively accepting applications.

Nonetheless, due to the increased interest in travelling to the Schengen Area, the embassy said that the waiting times are longer than expected, up to a few months.

Italy & Spain Also Said That They Are Continuing to Accept Visa Applications

Similar to Germany, the other two countries, Italy and Spain, have also denied claims that they are no longer accepting visa applications in Türkiye.

According to Daily Sabah, the Spanish Consulate in Istanbul said that visa applications are open. However, the authority emphasised that there are currently no appointments available until June.

As an increased number of Turkish nationals are interested in travelling to the bloc in the coming months, the Spanish Consulate in Istanbul revealed that all appointments for May have already been booked.

New appointment slots will be made available in June, and by then, the consulate expects to process a high number of applications.

The Italian Embassy also confirmed that they are accepting and processing Schengen visa applications.

Moreover, the Embassy of Italy said that appointments for this month are fully booked and that new ones will be made available in June.

Türkiye has been trying for years now to reach a visa-free travel agreement with the EU. However, since the country has yet to meet some benchmarks set out by the EU, the process is still ongoing.

While it is still unclear when Turkish passport holders will be able to travel to the Schengen Area visa-free, Türkiye has pushed for young researchers and entrepreneurs to be exempted from the visa requirements, at least.

According to the Turkish authorities, it is important that this group of citizens are subject to facilitated rules as they would boost innovation and technology in the EU.
