Germany Has Recorded Over 80,000 Asylum Applications So Far in 2023
Data provided by BAMF show that in the period January-March 2023, a total of 87,777 people applied for asylum in Germany. While 80,978 were initial applications, another 6,799 were follow-up applications, AtoZSerwisPlus.de reports.
As a result, compared to the year 2022, when 44,908 initial applications were filed in the same period, the new numbers recorded in the first quarter of 2023 have marked an increase of 80.3 per cent.
In addition, the 5,817 initial applications that were registered in 2023 were filed for children born in Germany older than one.
According to BAMF figures, during March of this year, the nationalities that submitted the highest number of requests for asylum in Germany are as follows:
- Syria – 23.127
- Afghanistan – 16,712
- Turkey – 10,582
“In the same period, the Federal Office decided on 68,119 initial and follow-up applications, the overall protection rate was 51.1 per cent,” reads a statement from the office.
This means that the requests of 14,192 persons were rejected, while another 19,146 procedures related to the Dublin procedures were interrupted due to the withdrawal of the asylum request.
Based on the BAMF report, the duration of the procedure for initial and subsequent applications for the entire federal territory was 6.5 months from January to March of this year. As for the annual procedure, which includes all decisions on initial applications and subsequent ones with applications submitted in the last 12 months, it lasted 3.6 months on average.
Moreover, BAMF revealed that at the end of last month, the number of pending cases was as high as 163,154.
In the same period, a total of 27,418 asylum requests were submitted to BAMF, of which 25,175 were initial applications, and 2,243 were subsequent applications, which means that compared to February, the number of first-time asylum requests increased by 4.8 per cent.
Previously, German authorities revealed that the Federal Office for Migration received a total of 31,362 asylum requests in January of this year.
In this regard, the same said that out of this above-mentioned figure, a total of 29,072 requests were for asylum for the first time, and 2,290 of them were subsequent applications.
Meanwhile, according to data from the German Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI), last year, 244,132 asylum applications were registered at the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees, representing an increase of 27.9 per cent compared to 2021.
