Germany Considers Revoking Citizenship of Dual Nationals Involved in Antisemitism
Germany Debates Revoking Citizenship of Dual Nationals Over Antisemitism and Extremism
Germany is currently in the midst of coalition negotiations between the Christian Democratic Union and Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) and the Social Democratic Party (SPD). Among the key topics on the table are immigration, integration, and domestic security—and one controversial proposal has sparked national debate.
According to newly surfaced policy planning documents, Germany may consider revoking the citizenship of dual nationals who are found to be supporting terrorism, engaging in antisemitism, or participating in extremist activities.
Coalition Disagreement Over Dual Citizenship
The working group addressing “Domestic Affairs, Law, Migration, and Integration” has been at the center of this contentious issue. Dirk Wiese, a member of the SPD and participant in the working group, highlighted the preservation of dual citizenship as a major success for his party.
In an interview with DW, Wiese stated that the SPD had fought to keep the option of dual citizenship intact, opposing the CDU/CSU's efforts to restrict or eliminate it.
Concerns Over Unequal Treatment and Social Division
The suggestion to revoke German citizenship based on antisemitic or extremist behavior—only for those who hold a second nationality—has prompted backlash from within the SPD and among community leaders.
Andreas Bovenschulte, the Mayor of Bremen and an SPD politician, voiced concerns during an interview with local German media. He warned that this measure could send a damaging message to Germany’s estimated five million dual nationals.
“It creates the impression that their citizenship is less valuable, and that they don’t truly belong in Germany,” Bovenschulte said.
His concerns were echoed by a Palestinian-German dual national who spoke with DW, explaining that the debate has created a "very tense atmosphere" for many citizens. The individual added that such policy changes risk deepening feelings of exclusion among people who were born and raised in Germany.
Legal Ambiguities Remain Unresolved
One major concern critics have raised is the lack of clarity on how authorities would determine who qualifies as an “antisemite” or “extremist” under such a rule. Without a legal framework, they argue, the proposed law could be applied inconsistently or even unjustly.
A Broader European Trend?
Germany is not alone in considering harsher measures against those engaging in hate-based behavior. The Netherlands and Denmark have also seen calls from political leaders to introduce stricter laws for individuals who commit antisemitic offences, including the potential for citizenship-related consequences.
Conclusion
While the idea of revoking citizenship as a response to antisemitism and extremism may be intended to strengthen national security and uphold democratic values, it is also sparking serious concerns about equal rights, social inclusion, and legal transparency. As Germany continues its coalition talks, the country’s future immigration and citizenship policies remain under intense scrutiny—both at home and across Europe.
