German Politician Renews Call for Stricter Border Controls Within Schengen Area
CDU leader Friedrich Merz has reinforced his stance on migration, urging stricter border controls to prevent asylum seekers from entering Germany. He is seeking public support for these measures, emphasizing the need for tighter regulations.
According to the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF), Germany registered 351,915 asylum applications in 2023, marking a 51% increase compared to 2022. Alongside France, Germany remains one of the primary destinations for asylum seekers in the EU.
Germany’s Border Controls with Schengen States
Germany has maintained border controls with Austria since 2015, following the European migration crisis. These controls have remained in place to regulate migration flows. As of November 2024, Germany recorded 17,730 new asylum applications.
Border checks are also active with France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Denmark, with extensions planned until at least September 2025. Authorities argue that these measures effectively prevent irregular migration and smuggling.
Uncertain Future for Migrants in Germany
The CDU is set to hold the most seats in the Bundestag (208), with its policies leaning toward stricter migration controls. The far-right AfD, which advocates for even tougher immigration restrictions, will have 152 seats, while the SPD (120), Greens (85), and FDP (below the 5% threshold) have significantly fewer.
Despite restrictive policies, Germany faces labour shortages, particularly in healthcare, where migrant workers play a crucial role. The ongoing political debate will shape the country’s approach to balancing migration control with economic needs.
