Fraport Welcomed 4.1 Million Passengers Last Month, 11.1% Increase Despite Pandemic Impact
This figure represents a significant 11.1 per cent increase compared to last year. However, despite this growth, passenger numbers remain 12.6 per cent below January 2019 levels, highlighting the ongoing impact of the pandemic, AtoZSerwisPlus.de reports.
Data provided by the FRA also revealed that cargo volumes at the airport experienced significant growth, increasing by 8.8 per cent year-on-year to reach 154,296 metric tons. At the same time, the number of movements also grew by 4.5 per cent to 31,060 takeoffs and landings.
According to these data, maximum accumulated takeoff weights (MTOWs) increased by 6.4 per cent to approximately 2.0 million metric tons.
Ljubljana Airport Leads Fraport’s International Growth
As for Fraport’s international portfolio, Ljubljana (LJU) in Slovenia significantly increased passenger numbers by 29.8 per cent year-on-year to accommodate 75,196 travellers.
On the other hand, airports in Brazil, such as Fortaleza (FOR) and Porto Alegre (POA), experienced a decrease of 6.3 per cent, receiving about 1.1 million passengers collectively.
Conversely, Lima Airport (LIM) in Peru witnessed a remarkable 21.4 per cent growth, serving approximately 2.0 million passengers.
Fraport’s Greek regional airports collectively welcomed 640,461 passengers, marking an increase of 7.4 per cent.
Meanwhile, Bulgaria’s Twin Star airports, consisting of Burgas (BOJ) and Varna (VAR), recorded a 12.0 per cent decrease with 85,231 passengers. In Türkiye, Antalya Airport (AYT) on the Turkish Riviera saw a modest increase of 4.4 per cent, accommodating 950,421 passengers.
Overall, the total traffic through the airports managed by Fraport recorded a strong growth of 9.5 per cent year-on-year, reaching around 8.9 million passengers in January 2024.
Passenger Traffic Recovered With 21.3% Growth in 2023, Still Below 2019 Levels
The previous FRA report showed that the airport experienced a recovery in passenger traffic throughout 2023, recording nearly 59.4 million passengers. This represents an increase of 21.3 per cent compared to 2022.
However, passengers remained 15.9 per cent below the levels seen in 2019. In addition, air traffic at FRA saw a significant increase, with Fraport recording 430,436 takeoffs and landings, reflecting an increase of 12.6 per cent compared to last year.
Fraport experienced a slight decline on the cargo front, suffering a 3.9 per cent year-on-year decline and a 9.3 per cent decline compared to 2019.
Moreover, increased passenger demand played a key role in the recovery of German airports during the second quarter of 2023, particularly at the central hub in Frankfurt, where passenger volumes rose to 80 per cent of pre-pandemic levels.
Based on FRA statistics, the Group’s total revenue experienced strong growth, increasing by 33.8 per cent year-on-year to reach €1,804.3 million during the first six months of 2023.
