Frankfurt Airport Registered Over 5.1 Million Passengers a Surge of 12.2% From May 2022
During the same period, FRA experienced a decline in cargo volume, indicating a broader economic slowdown. The total cargo throughput, including airfreight and airmail, was 10.2 per cent lower than in May 2022, amounting to 155,963 metric tons, AtoZSerwisPlus.de reports.
On the other hand, the number of aircraft movements at FRA increased slightly by 1.9 per cent compared to May 2022. The airport recorded a total of 37,278 takeoffs and landings last month.
Further data provided by FRA also revealed that the accumulated maximum takeoff weights (MTOWs) at FRA grew, reaching approximately 2.3 million metric tons in May 2023. This represents a 5.1 per cent increase compared to the same period in the previous year.
In May of this year, Fraport’s global network of airports also recorded further growth in passenger traffic.
As a result, Ljubljana Airport (LJU) in Slovenia counted 110,926 passengers in the reporting month, marking an increase of 30.4 per cent from year to year. At the same time, traffic at Brazil’s Fraport airports of Fortaleza (FOR) and Porto Alegre (POA) also increased to over one million passengers, an increase of 8.1 per cent.
In addition, last month Lima Airport (LIM) in Peru also served over 1.7 million passengers, representing a growth of 14.8 per cent compared to the previous year. The total passenger volume at the 14 Greek regional airports reached 3.3 million passengers, showing an increase of 16.7 per cent year-on-year.
In Bulgaria, the two coastal airports of Burgas (BOJ) and Varna (VAR) experienced vigorous expansion, with a combined total of 224,003 air travellers. This represents a growth rate of 30.3 per cent compared to the previous year.
According to these figures, Antalya Airport (AYT) in Turkey registered 3.4 million passengers in May 2023, which reflects a growth of 27.7 per cent compared to the same month the previous year.
Overall, the total number of passengers at the airports actively managed by Fraport expanded by 16.7 per cent year-on-year, reaching 14.8 million travellers in May 2023.
Previous figures provided by Frankfurt Airport also show that in March of this year, approximately 4.3 million passengers travelled through the airport, representing a remarkable increase of 45.4 per cent compared to March 2022.
The same source pointed out that if the one-day strike of public services on March 27 had not affected FRA, the airport would have been able to serve about 160,000 more passengers. This would have resulted in an increase of over 50 per cent in passenger numbers compared to the previous year’s period.
