Financial Situation of Families With Migrant Background in Germany Decisive for Educational Success of Children
According to the evaluation, young people from families with a migration background in eastern Germany attend high school more frequently than those in the western part of the country.
The team that did the evaluation took as an example those who attend grammar school and found out that 56 per cent of young people from families with migration backgrounds attend this school in the East, while only 28 per cent of them attend it in West Germany.
After analysing such figures, the study concluded that the main reason for such patterns lies in the socio-economic background of parents, AtoZSerwisPlus.de reports.
The study shows that there are fewer or no immigration-related disparities in eastern Germany, and it points out that there are educational advantages for young people of the second immigrant generation, especially in the grammar school sector.
In addition, it points out that children whose parents have migrated to Germany attend grammar school more often than their classmates whose parents do not have a migrant background
Regarding other fields of study, it has been emphasised that the educational background of parents is decisive for the success of the children.
“In the western German federal states, migrants – unlike in the east – still often work as low-skilled and low-paid workers. The lower immigration-related inequality in grammar school participation in East Germany is attributed to lower immigration-related inequality in the social background and social composition of the school classes,” the statement of the European website on integration reads.
In addition to the above-mentioned, the authors stressed that educational policy measures and attendance at day-care centres do not have a significant impact on educational success and noted that in both areas, there are no differences between East and West Germany.
Previously, AtoZSerwisPlus.com reported that one in four people living in Germany has a migrant background.
A survey that was carried out by the Federal Statistical Office of Germany, Destatis, revealed that by the end of 2021, about 22.3 million people living in Germany had a migrant background, representing an increase of two per cent compared to 2020.
Based on such figures, it means that around 27.2 per cent of the entire population in Germany has a migrant background.
