40% Increase in Overnight Stays in Germany, in February 2023
However, despite the notable surge, the figures are still below those recorded in 2020 by 11.7 per cent, AtoZSerwisPlus.de reports.
“Based on provisional results, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that this was a 40.5 per cent increase on February 2022, when there had still been some closures and restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic,” the statement notes.
An increase in the number of overnight stays was also registered in the first month of this year. Previously, Destatis report showed that accommodation establishments in Germany welcomed a total of 24.0 million visitors in January this year or 48.3 per cent increase compared to the same month last year.
However, even though the country saw a significant surge in the number of overnight stays in January 2023, the figures remained 10.5 per cent lower compared to January 2020.
Germany’s tourism industry has also been affected by COVID-related restrictions which led to a decrease in the number of foreign visitors, however, the situation has improved significantly, following the amelioration of the epidemiological situation and the easing of restrictions.
The Federal Statistical Office previously revealed that the tourism sector in the country recovered significantly last year, still the figures were below those recorded before the pandemic.
Based on the Destatis report, Germany registered about 450.8 million overnight stays last year, thus accounting for a 45.3 per cent surge compared to 2021 figures.
Besides, compared to pre-pandemic levels, the number of overnight stays registered in this country last year remained behind by a total of 9.1 per cent.
“The tourism industry in Germany recovered partly from the Covid-19 crisis compared with 2021. Based on provisional results, Destatis reports that accommodation establishments in Germany recorded 450.8 million overnight stays of visitors last year,” the statement reads.
This, according to Destatis, accounted for an increase in overnight stays of 45.3 per cent compared to 2021, still a decrease of 9.1 per cent compared to pre-pandemic levels.
The same source showed that the most significant increase in the number of overnight stays last year was recorded during the peak summer season, during which period Germany received a large number of visitors.
Destatis’ figures also revealed that a total of 45.4 per cent increase in accommodation and food services was registered last year, thus accounting for a significant improvement.
