1 Million Ukrainian Refugees in Germany since February 2022, 61% Are Women
According to the same source, Germany experienced a net immigration of about one million people from Ukraine in 2022 and the first half of 2023, AtoZSerwisPlus.de reports.
Among Ukrainian immigrants in Germany, four out of ten were either single parents or children of single parents upon arrival. Despite a considerable level of education, only one in five individuals aged 25 to 59 who emigrated from Ukraine were employed.
61% of Ukrainian Immigrants in Germany Are Women in 202
In the first half of this year, a total of 61 per cent of individuals living in Germany, having immigrated from Ukraine since the beginning of 2022, were female, while 39 per cent were male. The gender disparity was even more pronounced, with 69 per cent being women and only 31 per cent men.
As Destatis explains, this imbalance is largely attributed to mothers relocating alone from Ukraine with their children to Germany. As a result, 40 per cent of those who immigrated from Ukraine during this period were either single parents (15 per cent) or children of single parents (25 per cent).
On the other hand, only eight per cent of the total population in Germany lived in single-parent families in the first half of 2023.
Moreover, in Germany’s population within the specified age group, 27 per cent held academic degrees. However, among 25 to 59-year-olds from Ukraine who immigrated since the beginning of 2022, the percentage with non-academic qualifications was 52 per cent. While Ukrainian women exhibited a higher academic qualification rate at 48 per cent, Ukrainian men lagged at 37 per cent.
Despite the elevated educational levels, the labour force participation of immigrants from Ukraine during the main employment phase (25 to 59 years) was considerably lower than the general population. Only 19 per cent of Ukrainian immigrants were employed during this period, in stark contrast to the total population’s 85 per cent employment rate.
Ukrainian Immigrant Women Face 14% Employment Rate in Germany
The employment gender gap was evident among Ukrainian immigrants, with women having a 14 per cent employment rate compared to men at 30 per cent. The employment rates were significantly higher, with women at 81 per cent and men at 89 per cent within the same age group.
Furthermore, Destatis pointed out that a sample survey conducted annually on about one per cent of Germany’s population reported around 673,000 immigrants from Ukraine since 2022 in the first half of 2023. This figure differed by approximately 354,000 individuals compared to migration statistics.
